Here we have provided links to organisations working in the area of trauma. We have included organisations that are primarily child and adolescent-focused or have particular relevance to the network. These organisations provide community information, services and professional resources. While we have looked at these sites and the resources they provide, we are unable to endorse the content of them.

ASeTTS - Association for Services to Torture and Trauma Survivors

Perth, WA

An organisation that provides treatment and support to people who have been tortured or traumatised by violent conflicts. Provides services to children and young people.

 

Australasian Journal of Disaster and Trauma Studies

This journal provides access to original material on disaster and psychological trauma studies. Includes back issues with many relevant child and adolescent-focused articles.
 

Australasian Society for Traumatic Stress Studies

Australasian region

This society provides a forum for extending the understanding of, prevention and treatment of major stress and trauma. One of the aims of the society is to advance knowledge about the nature and consequences of highly stressful events.


Australian Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health

University of Melbourne, Victoria

Provides trauma-related research, policy advice, service development and education. Assists organisations and health professionals who work with people affected by traumatic events. A primary focus on adults but some child-related information as well.

 

Australian Childhood Foundation

Monash University, Victoria

Provides a range of specialist counselling services for children and young people affected by abuse and their families. It provides community and professional education as well as debriefing programs. The organisation also promotes the use of child-centred practices.

 

Embrace the Future

Mental Health Foundation of Australia

An Australian program being developed in collaboration with young people to educate young people in strategies and skills which promote and sustain resiliency and positive mental health. Features a resiliency resource centre, a kids site and a youth site.

 

Galileo House

Hobart, Tasmania

A free and confidential trauma counselling and support service for children and young people, which specialises in child sexual abuse and problem sexual behaviour for children under 13 years.

St Lukes Anglicare

A site that contains many resources available to purchase. Resources available include those specifically developed for use with abused or traumatised children and adolescents.

 

QPASTT - Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Trauma and Torture

Brisbane, Qld.

An organisation that aims to provide assistance to people who have undergone, witnessed, or experienced torture or trauma, in or during flight from their home or countries. Programs specifically for children and young people.

 

Rainbows

Rainbows is a National and International program providing developmentally-designed programs to support people from three-year-olds to adulthood who have experienced change, loss and grief. The Program also provides 'Silver Linings', a students Community Crisis Response Program to be used across classrooms.

 

STARTTS - NSW Service for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Trauma and Torture Survivors

Sydney, NSW

An organisation that provides services for refugees, asylum seekers and people from refugee-like situations who have survived torture or other traumatic experiences associated with organised violence. Provides services for individuals (including children and adolescents), families and communities. Services include counselling, group activities and outings and camps for children and young people.


Stop Child Abuse Now

Australian Childhood Foundation, Australia-wide

This website promotes community understanding of child abuse and neglect. Provides information for the community on recognising the signs of child abuse and how to go about stopping it once it's recognised.


STTARS - Survivors of Torture and Trauma Assistance Rehabilitation Service

Adelaide, SA.

Assists people from refugee and migrant backgrounds who have experienced torture or been traumatised as a result of persecution, violence, war or unlawful imprisonment prior to arrival in Australia. Includes counselling services for children and young people.


Transcultural Mental Health Centre

Mental health information brochures and factsheets available to download in a number of community languages. Includes a family help kit for post-traumatic stress.

 

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation

A national charity keeping children safe from violence and its devestating impact.

 

VFST - Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Trauma Inc.

Melbourne, Vic.

Provides a range of services for people from refugee backgrounds who have survived torture or war-related trauma. Works with children and young people, families and communities. Has also developed a school program.


International organisations

American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress

United States

A multidisciplinary network of professionals that are committed to the advancement of intervention for survivors of trauma. 

 

Canadian Foundation for Trauma Research and Education

Canada

Furthers the understanding of fields of neurobiology and psychophysiology through education and research as they pertain to the treatment of traumatic conditions. Primarily for adults' trauma.

 

Child Trauma Academy

United States

Many resources in relation to child trauma and child traumatic stress that are relevant to parents and professionals. Provides training for those who work with trauma-exposed children and adolescents.

 

Children and War Foundation

Norway

Promotes research, studies and knowledge on the impact of war, inner-city violence and disaster on children. Includes excellent resource and reference lists as well as free measures for assessing children and adolescents. Also access to Teaching Recovery Techniques manual that can be used with large numbers of children following a broad range of catastrophes.

International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation

The International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation is an international, non-profit, professional association organised to develop and promote comprehensive, clinically effective and empirically-based resources and responses to trauma and dissociation and to address its relevance to other theoretical constructs.


International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies

United States

International multidisciplinary, professional membership organisation that promotes advancement and exchange of knowledge about severe stress and trauma.

 

John Briere, Ph.D.

United States

John Briere is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at the University of Southern California. His website provides access to publications, tests and links relating to trauma in adolescent populations.

 

National Child Traumatic Stress Network

The aim of the Network is to raise the standard of care and improve access to services for traumatised children, their families and communities throughout the US.
